A message from Debbie...
MONDAY, DECEMBER 17, 2007

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning...
Lamentations 3:22-23

There are no words to express how blessed we have been by our Lord, family, friends, and community.  It is the prayers and compassion of many that have made our situation tolerable and at times even joyful.  Please continue to lift our family in prayer as all of you will forever be in our prayers of thankfulness.

Doug was discharged from The Craig Hospital in Denver on  November 15, and we were able to spend Thanksgiving together with family and friends.  He remained home until December 4th when we realized it was an impossible task to get Doug the intense therapy he needs from a rural home health service.  He was admitted back into Covenant for inpatient rehab.  This was very hard on our family as we had just gotten him home after 4 ½ months, but we thought it would be the best for Doug as there had been noticeable loss of strength in the 2 weeks he had been home.

Doctors believe Doug will continue to gain strength and function.  It is just a VERY long process and more a test of mental than physical endurance.  Since returning from Craig, Doug is able to move freely above his upper chest, with the exception of his hands.  Although he has regained movement of  his right hand and somewhat of his left, strength and dexterity have yet to come.  The prognosis for Doug regaining these functions is very good.  There is also more movement in Doug’s right foot.  His left foot, like his left hand is a little slower to come around, but there is movement there and it continues to improve.

Doug remains confined to a wheelchair and relies upon others to care for him.  These are the biggest hurdles as anyone who knows Doug can attest to.  But he has a very strong will and faith in the Creator who has never abandoned us, not one minute.

As soon as we can make arrangements for transportation to and from Lubbock, we will be bringing Doug home and he will travel most of the week to outpatient rehab in Lubbock.  He needs the tender care of family, the fellowship of friends, and intense therapy to continue to make strides in his recovery.  Even with so many needs to be met, we are still comforted by knowing the Lord will provide and prosper those who believe.  Thank You for allowing the Prince of Peace to use you as a means of providing for the needs of our family.

May you and your families have a blessed Christmas and a prosperous New Year!

Sincerely,

Debbie Smith
